In-ear monitors for your worship team: a starter guide

Short answer: in-ears remove wedges from the stage, lower the room’s overall volume and give every musician their own mix. Moving to in-ears is probably the highest impact-per-dollar upgrade for a worship team that already owns a digital mixer: a silent stage, less feedback, a cleaner mix for the congregation, and musicians who can finally hear themselves. But it is also a change in team culture, and it pays to roll it out in phases.

What do in-ears actually improve?

  • Stage volume drops drastically. Without wedges competing against the PA, the room mix is controlled from the console, not from the stage.
  • Every musician gets their own mix. The bassist can turn themselves up without affecting anyone else.
  • You protect the team’s hearing. A well-sealed in-ear isolates from noise and allows monitoring at far lower levels than a wedge.
  • Click and guide tracks. If the team uses a metronome or backing tracks, in-ears are the only reasonable place to send them.

The price you pay: a feeling of isolation at first, some logistics (hygiene, cables or batteries) and the need for a properly built monitor mix.

Wired or wireless?

How do you migrate the team without drama?

  1. Phase 1 — vocals. Singers suffer most without monitoring and notice the improvement fastest. Start there.
  2. Phase 2 — rhythm section. Drums and bass on click open the door to tracks and pads.
  3. Phase 3 — remove the wedges. Once everyone is on in-ears, the wedges leave the stage and the PA breathes.

Always schedule one real rehearsal per phase: the first time on in-ears in a live service should never be the actual first time.

  • Cloned mixes. If everyone receives the same mix, you bought very expensive wedges. The whole point is the individual mix.
